9. January 2010 to add: I changed the review to some details about some problems I have with the phone, slow down leading to dehydration and twice suffered a system crash, the extermination of the phone’s memory will have. I devoted a large part of the amended contribution to an argument I had with Nokia customer service. I know that unfair and irrelevant to the review of the phone, so I removed it.
Although it says I bought the phone at Amazon, I actually bought directly from Nokia. I said to designate the Amazon, where I thought they had the wrong color. I’m sorry, it happened that it would buy at Amazon have been a better experience.
My original review:
The quality of materials and fit / finish & construction is the first thing that struck me, taking them out of the box. It has nice interface everywhere a shiny steel bezel on the front and highlights around the lower part, a matte-black (brown) metal finish on the bottom with a stainless steel battery cover and camera lens bezel. The battery door latches secure (and fast) as opposed to any phone I have ever heard. The phone feels heavy in a quality manner. It fits in your hand in a way that it is much thinner than you might expect from the measurements. The flare at the bottom makes it feel more secure in your hand. The increased aperture lens makes it easy to accidentally with the camera lens as a grip.
So many professionals. . .
– touch screen responds very quickly and has kinetic scrolling, and it is easy on the screen without accidentally stop start something.
– browser is full screen and looks great. (con embedded – I’m not sure I like the controls that attach pop-up for some basic things such as “Back” or bookmark. I can not find an easy way to locations without the clunky set of controls.)
– The 3-line backlit keyboard is easy to see in low light, and it looks awesome with the gray and orange lighting. The layout works well for me, I’m already comfortable with how it works and find it much better than keyboard with 5 rows of keys.
– 16 x 9 monitor has excellent color and brightness, even outside. Perfect format for watching movies in full screen mode.
Hat – see native support for Flash and Java as YouTube’s Flash-based websites and how they should.
– If the keyboard The screen tilts into a good angle, either for writing with your thumbs or setting it on a table. Works great for watching videos, you do not have to prop it on something.
– Stereo speakers for great speakers. Music sounds excellent through headphones, it sounds like a high-end MP3 player. Music player has the best sort, album art, search, create playlists, and ID3 tag editing I have ever seen on a mobile phone – wow.
– Accelerometer is quite fast and all the menus and screens and all but a few third-party have a Landscape. You need to turn it on, it is disabled by default. The keypad forces a landscape format.
– This is the customizable phone that I ever had. Nothing is is securely locked, put it works best where there for you. I’ve downloaded about a dozen topics, and love how much you can personalize the look of the menus and screens, even the icons.
– The Home screen is widgitized course, just as adaptable, but has a different function I did not expect. You can swipe your finger over it and hide all widgets reader so that your phone’s display is only the wallpaper, you’ve selected and the clock at the top. Another swipe reader brings them back.
– The quality and signal strength is very good – what you’d expect from Nokia. I am replacing a Samsung Eternity and the phone is a dramatic difference, it is so much better.
– All the stuff telephone, voice dial, speed dial, endless contact list with all the fields that you will ever need, excellent contact list access / search, Full MP3 ringtones, etc. It’s all there and very well implemented loaded.
– It comes with applications that can all be removed if you wish. E-mail is in a few different options available, a pay-push system or free mail client in the messaging bundle. POP3 or IMAP.
– App Store for Symbian S60 is plentiful, and there are plenty of free applications and themes as well as those who paid by you.
– GPS quickly to a location is very solid and well sealed. Works much better than it was outside, inside.
Was – easy to set up WiFi with WPA and MAC address security on my home system. It seems a bit flakey on the connection or the phone to decide which network for certain applications, GSM or WLAN is used. I have no way to configure this, but I’m sure it’s there somewhere. (edited: a call to Nokia support ensured. There is a way to make, questions that use the connection to the start)
– headphone jack does have video-out, hands-free microphone & Music single controller in the 3rd 5mm plug. A nice headset with microphone and music control is included, but no video cable.
– Camera is on what can I say excellent, have not tried the tapes.
you get the idea. . . I like this phone. It does everything and does it in a mature way, the OS feels like it’s no-nonsense, something made for adults.
Now the drawbacks (including a major – Nokia Oops!) < , br />
– limited video codec support. No DivX. Player by Real Player. I’m looking for a video player about to replace it – suggestions would be appreciated.
– Picture Viewer does not recognize folder. This means that all your contacts, album art, photos and phone are collections of photos, all in a list, not necessarily in the order that would sort you expect. It is a pain to do with photos (my old phone) works the same way. I can see, there are Third Party Apps, which seem to solve all problems -. A Nokia update would be nice if the photo viewer available.
– GPS has an indicator to show it’s running, but it does not indicate when it is connected to a satellite. (edit: some of the GPS applications have a satellite signal strength indicator on the screen.)
– some of the menus and integrated applications like the media player has a sweet retro look. A bit of hides had contributed to smaller boxes, less than 3-d shadow, and so touched. Simple would have been nicer. Maybe some different fonts.
– There is a flashing display of unread messages that are no longer flashing. I think I have everything marked read, but how it continues to flash.
– The screen is turning a little stiff, but it is spring, it will go when it flies into place. Check with your fingernail under the back really helps pop lock it. A small indent back it would have helped.
– USB port is exposed (dust) and is placed on the front so it’s a bit embarrassing, as it plugged in with
– but not a con I have not figured out where is the microphone – so I’m not sure if I’m put my finger on it.
– Here’s the big one. . . The bottom of the phone is the camera with the lens aperture on the one hand and a torch on the other side make it sit flat on a flat surface. The square in front of the lens bezel is enough to tip it when the keyboard on this page. It’s frustrating, something that such use is obviously high quality and have it wobbly, bouncing up and down as you try to type. It is easy to get around by slightly less. It’s like an annoying table in a restaurant that has a matchbook under one leg to make it stable.’s
The original N97, was the design of this phone, a lens in a shroud that the front of the phone extended. Leaving the lens cover from the mini was the problem. The designers have not been fully tested (or its design), but it is clearly a mistake Nokia needs to be corrected.
This phone is too cool to give up, so I have a wooden match to stabilize and then I realized, could stick it on just in case.
I took a picture of my mod and it will match load into the user photo gallery. If someone comes up with a solution for the case tippy I would like to see, I hope the mini for at least a few years ago.
Edited – 03-05-10: I have a few Photos in the gallery. This will display the ThimblePad foot in place and also the clarity of the Clarivue Screen Protector. Plus I added a couple of shots that are just pure love for the design of this phone.
I had a big ugly scratch in the original Clarivue Screen Protector (my fault, and the protector has does its job well saved, my screen) so I have to replace one of these Silberling units they sell here at Amazon. It was terrible, it showed every finger swipe reader a scratch, leaving a sticky residue on the phone when I removed it. The Clarivue was never checked by me using it and left no residue at all when it came into being. I got a new one and finally to the photos that I promised a few months ago.

I’ve had this phone for just over a week ago and am very satisfied with the results so far. But before I begin, I feel like some caveats are in order. Are 1) If you expect an Apple iPhone UI experience in terms of simplicity and whistles and bells, you will be disappointed with the operating system used by this smartphone (Symbian S60 5th edition). 2) You definitely need a data plan, full use of this phone get – preferably by taking AT & T the advantage of 3G speeds. 3) This phone uses resistive touch screen technology – as such it is not as sensitive as that used in many commercial touch-screen smartphones on the market in the U.S.. If you come from that background, you will find this a little difficult to get used to it. That is, if you live in a colder area, you will be able to use this phone, while wearing gloves.
With this out of the way, here are the impressions I have:
1) This is a well-built phone with nice use of metals and plastics, a higher quality. It feels good firm hand – and compact. There is absolutely no squeaks (you can not even tell you straight up that the phone appears to have a keyboard) and the hinge robust and well designed – time will tell. On the negative side, I have noticed that a little light leak from a couple of the keys and the camera button also feels a little stiff.
2) I have the keyboard to tactile and I was able to adapt very quickly. There is enough space between the keys to enter a relatively accurate experience. The spacebar is slightly offset, which may throw some people.
3) The overall impression of the OS is quite fast. I come from a Nokia N95 8GB, I have definitely seen a rise in velocity of the menu seems to transitions and application load times.
4) The out-of-the-box firmware quite stable. I have the phone about a week and have not experienced a lock-up had not yet. My previous phone would crash at least once every few days, its stability is an important issue for me and the phone (so far) seems to pass muster.
5) The launch window is fully customizable. This is a great feature and gives you as much as one-touch access to the things that you use most often – the applications, contacts, music player, and a range of web widgets (facebook, e-mail , weather)
6) The GPS is rapidly locks especially if it can use assisted GPS function (the mobile phone to access data from the Internet at a faster GPS fix) to preserved. The phone also with maps of the United States and Canada come pre-installed. For voice navigation, you must purchase a license from Nokia to. I find their service as correct and ok value for money.
7) The camera takes great pictures for a phone, and is one of the main reasons I bought this phone. I noticed a slight improvement on the camera module from the N95, although the data are virtually the same. I can not imagine that Nokia have the camera image processing software a bit pinched. It is worth noting, however, that the quality will never be as good as even a rudimentary camera – especially in low light conditions. That is to say, always with a camera on your person for the “on the fly photography is awesome. It’s also great to be able to upload to Flickr or Facebook on a photo that you want to track.
The music player is a nice job and delivers rich sound. There is no FM radio on this model (unlike the N97 standard), so the connection to a car radio must have a Bluetooth or wired to the headphone jack (it’s a standard 3rd is 5 mm jack)
9) Connecting to a computer simple. Nokia is the OVI suite, which helps synchronize your calendar, music, Photos and videos etc. You can also download new maps and backup your phone data with this software. Sorry, you need a PC will need to install it. With a Mac, you will still be able to launch the phone in mass storage mode so that you can fall down music manually to the phone.
10) Battery life is pretty good. Ultimately, of course, it depends how the phone how long it lasts. If you are serious widgets and GPS data, you’re battery is depleted very quickly. It easily lasts a full day average use (few calls, 10-15 text messages, an hour of music while browsing the Internet on Opera Mini, checking some e mail from my Gmail account and less than 2 or 3 photos)
11) You can use a variety of 3rd party apps for this phone – free and paid. I recommend downloading Opera Mini (an alternative browser), Fring (a VoIP application that connects to the Skype network allows) and JoikuSpot (an app that turns your phone into a wireless hotspot, and comes installed on this phone) is . can save your Nokia OVI be used for downloading applications, but I have not had great experiences with this method – I think the App Store too badly organized and the access point is slow and klunky. There are other stores out there where applications You can download that offer a better experience in my eyes.
12) As it currently does, you probably will import in a case and screen protector for this phone. I’m sure that this will change in the coming months.
All in all, this is a great phone – it is extremely versatile and has so far coped well with everything I threw at them. It lacks the wow factor of the iPhone and the N900 in the UI department, but if you look at the past and want a functional, aesthetic, this smartphone is a decent option.
*** ** EDIT: I have the phone full time for about a month and am now in a good position to my review with the following comments about features that I have discovered / missed in my original review used as a supplement and error I had with the firmware to the device (ie, occurred delivered v. 10th 2. 020).
13th Voice / phone capabilities: It is a testament to many other features of this phone that I, to the vocal capabilities of the phone mentioned neglected. They are pretty well what did you expect to work with Nokia devices in general – I have 4 models heard in my life, and each has a strong voice made functionality. General Reception on the phone is very good, nice voice comes through clearly and I have had no complaints from the other end. Another negative point would be here though is that I like to add that the speakers are on this phone is not quite as impressive as other devices I’ve owned. They just seem much less powerful and much more tinny. As a consequence, I use my hands free, is limited to quiet areas.
14th I got a nice case for the phone PDAIR. It is a leather case of species which houses the phone nice and safe. It is not too much mass to add to the phone. I also have a screen protector from the same supplier.
15 Updated information on using the battery: Again, I am quite excited about the longevity of the battery vs. my personal daily use. I do not use hard data widgets but I’ve checked the e-mail push function of my e-mail client (ProfiMail). I pile up regularly in the generally non-business e-mail, so it does not go on for 12 hours per day, but I get at least 15 emails per day. This became my regular usage has, as mentioned above (namely some calls, 10-15 text messages, an hour of music while browsing the Internet on Opera Mini and less than 2 or 3 frames). I usually have about 4 bars of battery left when I plug it again for free night. When I see a day when I really intending it hard to use, I put it in my computer work to make him a little more juice. One thing I noticed, if this is that I am not able to access my music on the device (probably recognize on your computer to access mass storage mode (where my music is stored), to name just charging the battery contrary). This is a little uncomfortable, but perhaps there is a workaround that I have not yet discovered.
16th Firmware Error: First up, do not be frightened away not to the following observations: None of them are real great deal breakers for me and they will probably be corrected in the next firmware update. As one of the first users of equipment, come to accept that there are some questions and you just hope that they do not make regular use of impact too much. This is the case here:
a. I noticed that if you need to get a call and activate the screen with the screen release button on the page you sometimes have to pass on the switch several times on the screen to activate itself. This can be irritating when you get up the dialer application if you use some automated system (ie, call your bank, etc.)
b. I noticed that on occasion (and the exact situation that this is not locked up indefinitely even inspired) the phone for a good solution for a few minutes before him. In the past this has happened, if I have a couple of 3rd Have been part of open apps and then tried to access the music player. I take this is usually a reboot of the phone. Ultimately, this can result in incompatibility or some 3rd party, it can be a kind of firmware problem. If anyone has had similar experiences, I would like to know what were your conditions. Again, this is not often and in all probability, a 3rd party app’s fault. I would also like to add that I never had the kind of lock, where you must remove the battery.
C. Memory management: If I were to change the device in any way, I gave it 256 MB of ROM, as opposed to the 128th That said, I have only met on memory mistake twice, and both were trying to account to the photo gallery. (As a side note, the Gallery needs to optimize something, it takes a while to load images, etc., and feels muddy overall. This is a bit annoying when the picture is having capacity of this phone, where they compared to other device features, but the attempt to show some of the pictures that you have made it there with the slow interface gallery dealing away some of the wow factor “for the user) from other devices. I recently purchased a program that gives me all sorts of data over the phone, including the available ROM memory and I’ve found that the amount of ROM you start with after a restart of the phone is slowly chipped, even if you are properly signed applications that you produce for the day. This is probably due to all the system processes the background applications that meet load as you are the phone all day long, and ultimately likely to give a reminder from our mistakes. Once again, I did this a few times, and if you apps remain in the conclusion that you are finished with hard-working (you get in this way re-battery) and restart the phone every once in a while, you probably will not encounter too often.
d. It is An error with the default ring tone profile that, despite assigning a ringtone to a profile / selects the software a bit different for certain people to call me. I can not explain this at all and checked all the settings.
< , br />
My initial conclusion is, and since the firmware is more mature, this phone would be better with age.

I am a gadget nut, with a particular affinity for Nokia and Symbian, which I find much more robust and user-friendly than many of the other options out there. I’ve used a number of Nokia E-series products, and returned to my E71 again and again – like so many, I believe it is one of the best smartphones ever made. However, I have tried recently and the N97 (twice). I returned the first one – it was obviously not ready for prime time. The second time was better because the firmware was more developed, but the phone was simply too big for me, especially after using the E71.
When were the N97 Mini available I was initially negative by the ratings, including those which it may seem less than the N97, but feel intimidated about the same cost. I’m glad I ignored the reviews. This is a phenomenal phone, starting with the phone. I believe that Nokia only BlackBerry is true when it comes to the strength and quality of the signal, and I do not understand why professional reviews only gloss over the phone capability – for me, it is one of the most important features of a phone. The launch window is very changeable – something that a deal killer for me re: iPhone was (I do not know that I have an e-mail, I will be able to see the email itself, without digging through four menus ). The Web browser is snappy and very good. The size is perfect. Build quality far beyond that of the N97, and is on a par with the E71. The touch screen is very responsive – I have a lot of resistive vs capacitive, but I was never comfortable with the iPhone to read, but feel that mini works very well.
If you are on AT & T, and laments the fact that you can not get a decent Android phone, then get this. It is you, you are looking to have done.
All in all very satisfied satisfied with your purchase. The only cautionary note that if you can find all the widgets and can use on everything, as greader, Facebook, etc., you def. run into battery issues. But you would on any phone.

Fee gps map updates, and free for ever, fully configurable, touch-screen are not good keyboard and my fingers small, good battery life, with plenty of perhaps 3 days (buy a car charger;), great photos and video. I thought of an iPhone, but that’s better. . . plus I can add more memory:)

I had the N97, which was unfortunately too plasticky tall and had a lot of problems (even after the latest firmware update 2. 0) – the biggest problem is that the lack of RAM and internal memory.
< , br /> I decided to get N97 Mini, because (it will explore many of these issues and because I love the form factor of the phone). The N97 feels like a mini high-end device because of its stainless steel materials and a higher quality plastic. The internal memory is not huge (now more deleting files / apps to free up disk space), and it just feels better in hand than the bulky N97 because of the smaller body size. It also seems to be more stable than the N97, even though they run basically the same firmware. It has even smaller amount of free RAM as I would like, but Nokia has a much better job optimizing RAM made in executing their own applications with the latest firmware, I never (an “out of memory” message). However, 3rd party applications that intensive memory (such as Garmin Mobile XT) give me problems.
The Symbian OS S60 5th Ed can be in terms of eye candy dull, but it is still one of the most functional mobile OS’s out there. I would rather choose functionality over beauty.
Overall, I would recommend this product to people, especially on the big brother, the N97.
